The striped stone arcades of Rila Monastery under the Rila mountains
From Sofia outwards

The best days out in Bulgaria start two hours from Sofia.

Two hours from the capital there is a monastery painted to the rafters, three hours away a Roman theatre that still sells tickets, and an hour south of that a lift pass at a third of Alpine money. Here is what each day costs and which one to book first.

The monastery day

Every Rila Monastery day leaves Sofia at eight. They differ after that.

The monastery itself is three hours of frescoed arcade, a working bakery at the gate and a mountain wall behind it. What changes is what you bolt on: a medieval church back inside Sofia, a hermit cave up the hill, or eight hours of lakes above the treeline.

Choosing a base

Bulgaria is small enough to sleep in three places and still see it.

What each base puts inside an hour of your hotel door.

The capital

In Sofia the Roman road runs under the metro station.

Half a day covers the mineral fountains people still queue at with bottles, the yellow cobbles, a cathedral with gold domes, and the grey marble arcades the Party built to be photographed from a balcony. The other half is lunch.

Winter

Bansko and Borovets sell a ski week for what an Alpine weekend costs.

The lifts open in December and the snow holds into April. Boards and boots are hired by the day at the bottom of the gondola, an instructor costs less than the kit, and the last run ends in a cellar bar with a grill in it.

Only here

Three things you can only book in Bulgaria.

A valley, a stage set and a tomb. None of them travel.

Kazanlak in June

The rose harvest

Bulgaria grows a large share of the world supply of rose oil, and it is still picked by hand before dawn, while the oil is in the petal and not the air. The fields are cut by the second week of June. Book the dates, not the month.

Sofia

The concrete the Party left

The Largo was built as a stage set for military parades and it still works as one. The guides grew up under it, which is why these walks are funnier and darker than the buildings deserve. Buzludzha, the flying saucer on the ridge, is a longer day out.

The valley below Shipka

The Thracian tombs

Under the farm fields sit the burial mounds of kings nobody can name. One holds frescoes from the fourth century BC, painted well enough that the replica built next door satisfies most visitors. The gold out of these graves fills three museums.

Dates, not whims

Four things in Bulgaria that run on a date, not on demand.

Most of the country can be arranged from a café the same morning. These four cannot. The season is short, the group is small, or the gear runs out.

  1. 01Private Access Rose Festival Kazanlak 05-07.06.2025Festival dates are fixed and the fields are cut by mid-June.
  2. 02The Seven Rila Lakes & Rila MonasteryThe chairlift runs in summer only and the ridge is full at weekends.
  3. 03Ski and Snowboard equipment rental in BanskoHire shops run out of boots in your size long before they run out of skis.
  4. 04Day tour to Skopje, North Macedonia – Small GroupSmall groups over the border fill a week ahead.
The other half of the year

From November the high trails close and the same mountains start selling lift tickets.

Bulgaria runs two seasons out of one range. The Seven Lakes chairlift and the ridge walks work from June into October. From December the Rila and Pirin peaks belong to Bansko and Borovets. The months in between are carried by thermal water, caves, monasteries and cellars, all of which are indoors or underground and none of which care what the weather does.

Over the border

Sofia is closer to Skopje than it is to the Black Sea.

Three borders sit within a morning of the capital. Skopje is the easy one: two and a half hours each way, a small bus, and a whole afternoon in a city built to be looked at. Niš is the same idea an hour further north.
